Entwickler, die bereits erfolgreiche Apps in zumindest einem App Store haben, werden von den anderen Plattformbetreibern dafür bezahlt, ihre Apps auch auf ihren OS lauffähig und in den jeweiligen App Stores verfügbar zu machen.

Letztes Jahr fand daher auf dem Mobile World Congress das erste Mal der App Planet statt, der auch in diesem Jahr wieder seinen Platz in der abseits gelegenen Halle 7 fand. War der App Planet im letzten Jahr schon einigermaßen schmuck- und emotionslos (gut, es ist eine Developer-Veranstaltung), so wurden 2010 zumindest Nexus One palettenweise verschenkt. In diesem Jahr war es noch schmuckloser und es wurden darüber hinaus noch nicht einmal Smartphones verteilt.

Jeden Tag gab es verschiedene Slots. Es fanden Vorträge, Workshops und Gespräche statt, inwieweit für den einzelnen Entwickler hilfreich müsste einer von ihnen beantworten.

Was mir auffiel war, dass nur Google seinen Entwicklern eine eigene Bühne gegeben hat. In einer kleineren Nebenhalle von einer der Haupthallen (Halle 8 ) hatte Android seinen Hauptstützpunkt. In dieser Form die einzige Präsenz eines mobilen OS in Barcelona. Das Grün in dieser Großflächigkeit nicht ganz einfach für die Augen, hat Google in dieser Halle seinen Entwicklern einen Ort und Gelegenheit gegeben, die eigenen Applikationen vorzustellen. Thematisch gegliedert, waren die Apps in Inseln zusammen gefasst, die Halle quirlig, dynamisch, jung, hier konnte man wirklich so etwas wie Aufbruchgeist spüren.

Klug war nicht nur, dass Google damit nicht in dem abgelegenen App Planet war sondern mitten drin. Auch waren in der Halle 8, einer der meist besuchten beim MWC, auf dem Boden überall große, runde, grüne Pfeile, die zu der Nebenhalle hinführten. Geschickter Weise nicht auf dem wirklich direkten Weg sondern so, dass man an den Ständen der Partner vorbei geführt wurde, wo wiederum überall grüne Androiden, grüne Bonbons und andere grüne Give Aways auslagen.

Der absolute Renner waren Bögen mit Android-Aufklebern, die in der Android-Halle verteilt wurden. Auf einem Bogen die unterschiedlichsten Roboter, stilisierte Schilder und sonstige Gimmicks. Diese Aufkleber gingen weg wie geschnitten Brot und jeder hatte welche in der Hand, lief damit wiederum über die Messe und infizierte andere damit.

Chapeau! Google, für diesen gelungenen Auftritt auf dem Mobile World Congress. Ich bin gespannt, ob im nächsten Jahr von den anderen Plattformbetreibern Ähnliches zu sehen sein wird und was dann vor allem Google machen wird.

Der MWC war in diesem Jahr zumindest gefühlt kleiner als im Vorjahr, große Namen fehlten wie zum Beispiel Nokia oder Yahoo! und auch die Besucherzahlen erschienen geringer. Wie auch in 2009 fiel mir wieder die “Zweiteilung” der Mobile Industry auf. Auf der einen Seite die carrier-nahen, “alten” Vertreter unserer Branche, wie zum Beispiel Infrastrukturanbieter. Hier wird auf jeden Fall ein dunkler Anzug getragen, alles sehr Old Economy.

Die andere Seite wird von den jungen, bunten und sich geradezu im App-Rausch befindenden Unternehmen bestimmt. Hier hat sich im Vergleich zu den Vorjahren allerdings auch eine Professionalisierung durchgesetzt, die etwas zu Lasten der Innovationsfreude gegangen ist. Dies war sehr gut bei den Mobile Premier Awards zu sehen, die am Montag statt fanden.

Mobile Premier Awards

In der Kategorie Innovation mussten die Finalisten jeweils einen Drei-Minuten-Pitch und im Anschluss daran einige kniffelige Juryfragen  überstehen. Die Präsentationen waren durchweg gut, manch eine etwas skuril. Bis in das Finale hatten sich nützliche und vor allem skalierbare Lösungen durchsetzen können, die alle über solide Monetarisierungsmodelle verfügten. Alle Gewinner gibt es hier. Insgesamt ein tolles Event.

Nokia / Symbian

Bereits beim MWC 2009 hatte Nokia angekündigt, in 2010 keinen Messestand mehr zu haben. Statt dessen war Nokia diesmal in einer Location ca. 150 Meter von der Fira Barcelona entfernt. Sicherlich gut gedacht, aber die Tumulte am Montag vormittag bei der Registrierung, da offensichtlich mehr als drei Mal so viele Menschen kamen als erwartet, waren unbeschreiblich. Entsprechend groß auch die Verärgerung bei Journalisten, Analysten und allen anderen, die Einlass begehrten.

Nokia hatte in diesem Jahr keine neuen Endgeräte dabei und wie bereits im Vorfeld kommuniziert gab es “nur” strategische Meldungen. So wird Nokia Maemo und Intel Moblin in eine gemeinsame Plattform MeeGo einbringen.

Während des MWC wurde Symbian endgültig Open Source, selbst war Symbian jedoch nur in Halle 1, ganz hinten auf einem kleinen Messestand vertreten. Für das OS mit dem größten Marktanteil weltweit wirklich etwas sehr kümmerlich.

Bei aller Kritik an Nokia für ihren Auftritt tagsüber – die Party, die Nokia dann am Montag Abend geschmissen hat, war wieder einmal toll. Dort trat als zweiter Live-Gig eine deutsche Band auf, The Baseballs, die in Finnland gerade in den Charts auf Platz 1 und in Schweden Stars sind. TechCrunch Mobile 2.0

Auch wie bereits im letzten Jahr hat Mike Butcher (@mikebutcher) von TechCrunch Europe ein Side-Event durchgeführt, diesmal in der theologischen Fakultät der Universität von Barcelona, einem wunderschönen Gebäude. Leider konnte die tolle Location nicht verhindern, dass ich mich doch meist gelangweilt habe.

Einzig der Vortrag von Noam Bardin, CEO von waze (@waze), war wirklich interessant. Er beschrieb, wie sie für ihren Verkehrsinformationsdienst einzig auf Crowd Sourcing gesetzt haben und damit großen Erfolg haben.

Bei den Pitches der Start-ups traten dann fast ausnahmslos die gleichen an den Start wie schon bei den Mobile Premier Awards. Da stellt sich die Frage, ob es keine anderen gibt oder die anderen nicht dabei sein wollten.

Google

Ein wahres Schmankerl war am Dienstag die Keynote von Eric Schmidt, CEO von Google. Das Video kann man sich nach Registrierung auf Mobile World Live anschauen und eine sehr gute Zusammenfassung hat Telco 2.0.

Einen Teil der Produktpräsentation von Googles Bild- und Texterkennung, die Hartmut Neven, Gründer von der gleichnamigen Neven Vision, die von Google 2006 gekauft wurden, gibt es hier.

Auch in diesem Jahr war ich auf dem MWC um Menschen zu treffen und nicht die neuesten Gadgets, Start-ups oder News zu “erjagen”. Natürlich bin ich über die Messe geschlendert und habe auch noch ein paar Infos mit, die ich gesondert verbloggen werde.

Da ich diesmal mehr auf Side-Events war, habe ich auch leider die erneute Verteilung von kostenfreien Nexus One in den Android Developer Sessions im App Planet verpasst.

Die Frage, die mir wohl am meisten gestellt wurde: “Was hat Dich am stärksten beeindruckt?” Eine Antwort darauf ist schwer, denn mein Fokus lag eher auf dem Networken als auf den Ausstellern und ihren Neuigkeiten. Was wirklich große Aufmerksamkeit beim MWC erzeugt hat war der Auftritt von Microsoft mit Windows Phone 7 und natürlich Google mit hunderten verschenkter Nexus.

Beeindruckt hat mich die immer größer werdende Gruppe von deutschen Vertretern in Barcelona. Das zeigt, dass unsere Branche wächst und die insgesamt positive Stimmung rund um mich herum in diesen fünf Tagen lassen mich gespannt und optimistisch auf das Jahr 2010 blicken. Denn diesmal ist es wirklich (!!!) “The Year of Mobile”.

* MPA in Entertainment – The best startup in Mobile Entertainment in partnership with the Mobile Entertainment Forum.
* MPA in User Experience – The best startup in Mobile User Experience in partnership with MEX.
* MPA in Social Change – The best startup using mobile for social change in partnership with MobileActive.org.
* MPA in Female Entrepreneurship – The best woman-lead mobile startup in partnership with Women 2.0 and the Women in Mobile Data Association.
