This week we will be looking at the world’s leading mobile e-book software wattpad.

What is it?
Wattpad is a mobile software platform for reading, storing and sharing ebooks. They have over 100k ebooks available which are uploaded by members of the community. The service is available on both the iphone as well as Blackberry and Java devices with support for over 1000 different mobile phone models in total. The collection of ebooks includes user-generated content as well as out of copyright classics such as Shakespeare, Sherlock Holmes and Charles Dickens plus new books written on a creative commons license. As well as full length novels you can find short stories, poetry, quotes, jokes and trivia. You can browse the content online or on your mobile phone and filter by recommendations or categories.

Key statistics and data
Wattpad have recently released some data about their service, which makes interesting reading:
- 3.1m applications downloads to date
- users from 450 mobile operators across 160 countries
- 63% of usage comes from Java devices, 33% from iphone
- iphone is the single biggest device followed by Nokia Series 40 handsets
- 78% of iphone usage comes from the USA
- Blackberry app usage grew 400% since the launch of App World
- usage typically increases at weekends by 10%
- Daily usage peaks in the evening at bed time
- Java users read the most at 2.6 sessions per day vs 2.3 for iphone and 1.6 for Blackberry users
You can get this data in Wattpad’s new mobile ebook report which is available free from their website.

Wattpad shows that applications which already have established themselves on Java or other platforms can benefit from launching iphone versions and gaining distribution on new app stores such as Blackberry App World.
That’s it for now – see you next week
