Die Monetarisierung mobiler Angebote durch Werbung schreitet voran. Nun hat Google in seinem Blog angekündigt, in den USA und Japan einen Test auf den mobilen Seiten von YouTube zu starten.

You may have noticed that we started running a test of display ads on select pages of the YouTube mobile site in the U.S. and Japan. This is our first step in testing mobile advertising for YouTube — it will give you a new way to interact with content on the go, while allowing us to learn how video viewers engage with mobile advertising. Our test advertisers will also have an additional branding tool at their disposal and the opportunity to reach the millions of people who visit YouTube every day on their phones.

Nett finde ich den Satz “it will give you a new way to interact with content on the go”. Tja, ist halt immer irgendwie anders, wenn Werbung dabei ist. ;)

Ob Google es schafft, den Verlustbringer YouTube aus dem tiefen Tal der Tränen heraus zu führen, bleibt allerdings weiterhin offen. Eric Schmidt, CEO von Googel, sagte kürzliche in einem Interview bei CNBC:

“It doesn’t hit our bottom line big time right now, but eventually we’d like to make some money out of it. But even if we don’t, even if eventually it’s a loss-leader, let me tell you that the fact that so many people come to YouTube means they ultimately go to Google and do Google searches and click on ads.”

In genau diesem Interview sagt er auch, dass Google erwarte, dass die Umsätze mit Mobile Advertising die derzeitigen Werbeumsätze übersteigen werden. Da ist ein Test auf mobilen Endgeräten letztlich nur konsequent.

Die Japaner kommen aber noch in einen weiteren Genuß, denn auch twitter testet im Land des Lächelns Mobile Advertising. In Europa hat twitter gerade den freien SMS-Service eingestellt.
