Die <a href="http://www.nytimes.com/aponline/business/AP-Nokia-Symbian.html" rel="nofollow">NYT</a> dazu:

Redeye analyst Greger Johansson in Stockholm, Sweden, said Nokia's move will make Symbian a tougher competitor to the other operating systems, considering that Symbian already has 60 percent of the smart-phone market. Symbian software has yet to be popular in the U.S., where the smart-phone market has been dominated by Research in Motion Ltd., Palm Inc. and manufacturers using Windows Mobile. Apple Inc., with its iPhone, is an up-and-comer.

Kevin Burden, director of mobile devices at U.S.-based ABI Research, said the move also should produce substantial savings for Nokia, which has been paying Symbian more than $250 million a year in licensing fees.

<a href="http://www.engadgetmobile.com/2008/06/24/nokia-buys-symbian/" rel="nofollow">Engadget Mobile</a>:

Other Symbian Foundation members include Texas Instruments, Vodafone, Samsung, LG, and AT&T (yep, the same AT&T that currently sells precisely one Symbian-based phone), so things could get interesting. The move clearly seems to be a preemptive strike against Google's Open Handset Alliance, LiMo, and other collaborative efforts forming around the globe with the goal of standardizing smartphone operating systems; the writing was on the wall, and Symbian didn't want to miss the train. Total cash outlay for the move will run Nokia roughly €264 million -- about $410 million in yankee currency.
